Austin Stern is a glass artist based in Tacoma, WA, who began blowing glass at age 14. After earning a degree in glassblowing from Emporia State University, he moved to Seattle to pursue his practice within the Pacific Northwest’s thriving glass community. He has exhibited internationally and taught in the U.S., Thailand, and Sweden.

Inspired by childhood toys, cartoons, nature, and fashion, Stern’s work explores themes of mental health and relationships through colorful, playful creatures. His Little Monsters series features cartoon-like figures that humorously embody anxiety and everyday struggles, inviting viewers to find lightness in life’s challenges.

What I Learned

During Austin Stern’s residency, I learned from his dynamic demonstrations focused on creating emotional Monster characters through expressive forms, bold colors, and advanced techniques. I gained knowledge of cane and cup work, glass sculpting, and drawing patterns within the glass to enhance character and emotion in each piece.

Applied Knowledge in Practice

I was able to apply the knowledge I gained from him to develop my own character-based works, which has become a direction I truly enjoy exploring.
